Once Upon A Dream

Kristina Bajilo

Location: Belgrade

Date: 10 – 27. 08. 2021

The exhibition “Once upon a Dream” by Kristina Bajilo, tackles the relationship between media and reality. Bajilo’s works use individual pieces as case studies that refer to various brands and their influence on popular culture. The exhibition questions the principle of reality, challenging viewers to differentiate between reality and the sphere of dreams. The works critique the product of mass consumption and the idea that success is measured by material possessions, such as branded clothes, expensive cars, and beautiful partners.

Bajilo also addresses the impact of the internet and global entertainment industry on our perception of reality, as existence becomes a fantasy with the disappearance of our former “reality.” The artist attempts to return the defunct aura to the work of art, which is becoming increasingly rare in this world of global images and information that network and intertwine among themselves.

The exhibition also explores the role of advertising in shaping our dreams and desires, using worn-out symbols, such as the attractive woman, as marketing constructs of capitalism. Bajilo highlights how capitalist society has exploited our need to belong, using marketing slogans directed at the consumer to impose their own values and interests.

“Once upon a Dream” invites viewers to question the reality presented to them and the role of capitalism in shaping their dreams and desires. Through her artistic practice, Bajilo critiques the product of mass consumption and the fetishism of merchandise, calling for a return to the authentic and unique “here and now.”
