Ivan Petrović’s artistic practice can be examined through a series of actions and investigations into the complexity of the photographic medium. By linking two types of phenomena — the unstable nature of the medium of photography with the discordant cultural, social, and political changes within Serbian society — Petrović’s artistic practice is based on the mutual relationships between documentary practice, appropriation, and revaluation. The dominant thematic and conceptual contents of Petrović’s photographic series concern questions of heritage, history, and discontinuity. Petrović’s work has simultaneously developed within the domains of artistic production, education, theoretical interpretations, and the study of the photographic medium, where his curatorial engagement, carried out through the activities of the Center for Photography (CEF), should be mentioned. Having graduated from the “Braća Karić” Academy of Arts in Belgrade in 2002 (Department of Photography), Petrović went on to become the co-founder and editor of the “Center for Photography” (2011). As the former editor of “Foto forum” (2010–2011) and author of the book „Foto-forum, Conversations on Photography” (2016), his contributions to the field also include authoring the annual exhibition “Closeness and Differences” (CEF, 2021). A recipient of the “Dimitrije Bašičević Mangelos” Award (2008) and the “KulturKontakt” scholarship in Vienna (2004), he currently serves as a lecturer at the Šumatovačka Center for Art Education, where he manages the photography program. He holds membership in the Association of Fine Artists of Serbia (ULUS).
