Robert Lozar was born in Novo Mesto, Slovenia, in 1967. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design at the University of Ljubljana in 1993, where he studied painting in the class of Metka Krašovec. While still a student, he received the Academy’s Student Prešeren Award in 1992.
Alongside the development of his artistic practice, Lozar has been actively involved in Slovenia’s wider artistic and intellectual scene. From 1995 to 2000, he served as editor-in-chief of Likovne besede, an important Slovenian journal dedicated to visual art and contemporary artistic discourse. His engagement with painting has therefore developed not only through studio practice but also through writing, editorial work, education and an ongoing involvement with the institutional and critical contexts of contemporary art.
Over the years, Lozar has developed a highly individual painterly language centred on questions of spatial perception, illusion and the physical presence of the painted surface. His work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Slovenia and internationally, including exhibitions at Moderna galerija (MG+) in Ljubljana, Galerija Krško, Galerija Bažato in Ljubljana and Galerija Kocka in Novo Mesto, as well as an early solo presentation in New York.
Lozar is a member of DLUD and ZDSLU (the Association of Slovene Fine Artists Societies), and since 2024 has served as President of the ZDSLU Artistic Council. He is also active in art education and currently teaches painting at the Faculty of Education, University of Maribor.
Through these parallel roles — painter, educator, editor and active participant in Slovenia’s contemporary art scene — Lozar has maintained a sustained engagement with painting as both a physical practice and a field of critical inquiry. HOWEVER, his solo exhibition at X VITAMIN Gallery, brings this long-term investigation into a concentrated dialogue between colour, surface, illusion and space.
