Exhibition GASTARBAJTER

On Thursday, July 3 at 8 PM, the exhibition GASTARBAJTER, curated by Stefan Bidner, will open at X VITAMIN Gallery, Resavska 19, Belgrade.

The exhibition brings together artists:

Mario Grubišić, Marko Lulić, Neda Nikolić, Negra Bernhard, Nikola Milojević, Rade Petrašević, and Masa Stanić, who explore themes of identity, cultural difference, and migration through the lens of contemporary art.

Today, economic and geographic mobility are closely linked: globalization benefits a minority while marginalizing the majority of the world’s population. How does the majority within one nation respond to ‘foreign cultures’ that coexist within its borders—are they perceived as a threat, a source of irritation, or as enrichment?, writes curator Stefan Bidner in the theoretical text accompanying the exhibition.

Through diverse media and narrative approaches, the artists shed light on questions of visibility, belonging, and the potential of art to respond to dominant social currents. GASTARBAJTER is at once a political, cultural, and personal study of those who exist in-between—between countries, languages, value systems, and positions of power.

The exhibition is realized with the support of the Austrian Cultural Forum in Belgrade.
