Almost Everything Touches the Soul

Almost Everything Touches the Soul

Sonja Gajić

Location: Belgrade

Date: 25.03 - 12.04.2022

The exhibition showcases the watercolor works of artist Sonja Gajić, who has previously been recognized for her sculptures. The exhibition marks a departure from her traditional art form, as the artist uses watercolor to express her emotions and personal experiences. The motifs of mythological beings and athletic figures are used to create a narrative of free association, with themes such as love, honesty, trauma, and family relations being explored.
Through her work, Sonja transcends physicality and deconstructs the figure in terms of sexuality, allowing viewers to interpret their own values and beliefs. The compositions are dynamic and sensual, with contrast arising from the emotions of pathos and emptiness as opposed to euphoria and fulfillment. The title of the exhibition, taken from a poem by R.M. Rilke, adds a layer of lyricism to the works.
Ultimately, the exhibition invites viewers to solve the riddle presented by each work, as they try to determine whether the figure depicted is falling, being elevated, or in free flight. Sonja’s use of watercolor allows her to present truth and illusion in equal measure, creating a new dimension of expression that opens up to the viewer.
