PUBLIC HOBBY 2: SERBIAN APSTRACT ART

Location: Beograd

Date: 29.05 – 28.06.2021

“Public Hobby 2: Serbian Abstract Art from the Collection of Dr. Nenad M. Kostić”

The exhibition “Public Hobby 2: Serbian Abstract Art from the Collection of Dr. Nenad M. Kostić” is a follow-up to the successful “Public Hobby” exhibition held at the X VITAMIN gallery in 2020. The exhibition features works from artists belonging to the programmatic focus of the gallery, including younger and middle-generation artists, as well as works from artists who ended their careers and lives in the last century.

The exhibition showcases around 80 works that are united by their use of “abstraction”, the native language of fine art. The exhibits are not grouped chronologically, and date from the 1960s to the present day. The exhibition aims to refresh the knowledge of the observer in this area, amidst the visually overstimulated, ideologically oversaturated, and marketing-overwhelmed contemporary art world.

The installations of the exhibition follow the structure of the exhibition of works of art in a private collection, blurring the boundary between public and private with personal items from the collector’s home such as furniture, decorative trinkets, lamps, carpets, and portraits of the domestic cat, Mia. The concept of the installation represents an exciting challenge for the gallery and the owner of the collection.

The exhibition also includes serious and entertaining programs, with collectors publicly discussing their collections, theorists analyzing approaches to acquisitions, and artists speaking about their experiences with collections. The exhibition is expected to grow into a movement that will win numerous sympathizers and valuable followers.

„Public Hobby“ aims to provide an opportunity for the audience to appreciate and reflect on the works of Serbian abstract artists, with the hope of creating a movement that celebrates this style of art.
