Gallery “X Vitamin” celebrates the 6th anniversary with the exhibition by Jelena Jelača “The Truth is Shaped in the Darkness” on Friday, December 22nd at 7 p.m. in the X Vitamin gallery at Resavska 19 in Belgrade.
Only one work will be exhibited representing the sublimation of previous Jelena’s practice and start of new phase in the artist’s body of work. During the past year she has created the painting as a reflection on current situation we have all witnessed. The work exceeds her previous achievements with its format and complexity offering to the audience the transcendental experience. Many realistic and fantastic characters thickly fill almost the entire surface of the canvas, confirming Jelena’s sense for the painting dramaturgy. In many ways this work and this exhibition raises concrete questions in a symbolic way.
After the pandemic period , we are immersed in current events that disturb us and hint at the fear of the apocalypse of our age. The end of the world represents the ultimate paranoia of humanity and raises many questions concerning the very concept of the world. What is the world from the homo sapiens perspective – the life of the individual, the life of our species, the different relationships and life protocols, the culture we nurtured? Does the end of the world represent someone’s death, the extinction of our species or the deconstruction of the concept of the world?
The fate of the survivor is to live with the melancholy of the end of the world. Jelena confronts us with the fact that our world is based on relationships. There is no loneliness without others. Is the survival at all costs a blessing or a punishment?
Jelena Jelača graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade in 1998, where she received her master’s degree in 2000. She has exhibited in groups and independently since 1994 in the country and abroad. Her work examines the position of the individual in relation to society, the re(construction) of identity, gender relations in the context of cultural and psychological dimensions. A specific approach in which the perspective of the observer and the participant intertwine in a fantastic way, as well as the documentary character of certain series, made the works of Jelena Jelača unforgettable not only among art lovers, but also among a wider audience. She manages to show the deep consideration of the human psyche and mutual relationships in a powerful and captivating way so that we always wish more.
